A tiny and peripheral nation (Greece) is going to the polls as we speak. Their vote won’t save them or the Euro — but maybe it could just postpone the disaster. The present crisis is nothing but the final settling of the accounts, on a continental scale, of the Market vs. State conflict, which has afflicted European politics for the last century.

Il Presidente della Repubblica (italiana) Giorgio Napolitano ha detto che bisogna abolire “la distanza fra la politica, (cioè lo stato, secondo lui), e la cultura.” Per “cultura” lui intende anche lo spettacolo, il cinema naturalmente, e tutto quello che adesso viene accorpato sotto quella classificazione dai quotidiani. Per cui, quando ho letto nell’interessante articolo di Virgina Postrel , la cui traduzione vi propongo oggi, che il Lincoln Center di New York ha incluso la moda fra le sue offerte culturali mi sono un po’ preoccupato. Sí, perché la moda è arte, e su quello non ho dubbi, (ed è anche perciò un veicolo di espressione individuale.
